Where to buy safe cannabis for your first time

Buy from a state-licensed dispensary. That is the safest option in the US. Licensed shops follow state testing and labeling rules. Bring a government ID. You must be 21 or older in adult-use states. Medical patients may be 18 or older with a state card.

Check the state regulator website before you go. Look up the dispensary license number. A valid license means the shop passed state inspections. Unlicensed sellers do not follow those rules.

First purchase parameters

Start with low THC. High THC can cause anxiety or paranoia for new users. For edibles, take 2.5 mg THC or less. Wait 2 hours before taking more. For inhaled products, one or two puffs is enough. Wait 15 minutes.

Know your state purchase limit. California allows 1 ounce of flower, 8 grams of concentrate, and 800 mg of edible THC per transaction. Other states set different limits. Taxes add 20 to 35 percent in some cities. Ask for the out-the-door price.

Check the price per milligram of THC. A 100 mg edible that costs $20 is 20 cents per mg. A 10 mg edible that costs $5 is 50 cents per mg. Higher price does not always mean better quality.

Pitfalls to avoid

If you are in a state without legal adult-use sales, do not buy from unlicensed sources. Wait until you travel to a legal state or get a medical card. The risk of contaminated or mislabeled product is not worth it.
