Types of Glass Pipes for Weed
Glass pipes for cannabis fall into six shapes: spoon, chillum, steamroller, bubbler, water pipe, and dab rig. Each does the same job. Smoke or vapor moves from a bowl through a channel to your mouth. The shape sets cooling, bowl size, and how much smoke arrives in one pull.
Spoon Pipe
The spoon is the standard hand pipe. A bowl sits at one end. A carb hole sits on the side. You cover the carb, pull, then release it to clear the chamber. Spoon pipes hold 0.1 to 0.5 grams. Length runs from 3 to 6 inches. A longer stem gives smoke more travel time, so the hit lands cooler.
Chillum and One-Hitter
A chillum is a straight tube with no carb. You pull from the mouth end while the flame draws at the bowl. A one-hitter, also called a bat or taster, is a chillum with a bowl that holds about 0.05 grams. These fit in a pocket. They burn hot because the smoke path is short.

Steamroller
A steamroller is a straight tube with the bowl on top and the mouthpiece at the end. The carb sits at the far end. Air enters the carb and pushes smoke down the tube into your mouth. The chamber is open, so a full pack burns fast. Bowl size is 0.2 to 0.5 grams.
Bubbler
A bubbler is a hand pipe with a water chamber. Smoke passes through water before it reaches your mouth. Water drops the temperature of the hit and traps some tar and ash. Bubblers hold 1 to 4 ounces of water. They sit between a spoon and a full water pipe in size.
Water Pipe (Bong)
A bong is a water pipe you hold upright. The bowl and downstem sit below the water line. Smoke travels down the downstem, bubbles up through water, and collects in a neck chamber. A beaker base holds more water. A straight tube makes a faster pull. Percolators, including tree, honeycomb, and showerhead designs, split the smoke into smaller bubbles.
Dab Rig
A dab rig is a water pipe for cannabis concentrate. It uses a nail or a quartz banger instead of a flower bowl. The banger is heated with a torch, then cooled to a target temperature before the dab. Quartz bangers reach 400 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit for low-temp dabs. Small chambers and recyclers keep vapor moving.
Glass Types
- Borosilicate: low thermal expansion, handles heat and cleaning. Most pipes use it.
- Soda-lime: softer, cheaper, cracks with fast temperature change.
- Quartz: used for bangers and nails. Tolerates high heat.
Joints, Bowls, and Sizes
Joint size matters when you buy separate parts. Common sizes are 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm, measured across the ground glass joint. Joints come male or female. Bowl depth runs from 0.1 grams to 1 gram or more. Ash catchers add volume and keep resin out of the main tube.
Cleaning
Resin builds on the inside walls and cuts airflow. Isopropyl alcohol at 91 percent or higher plus coarse salt breaks down resin. Soak for 30 minutes to overnight, then rinse with warm water. Skip boiling water and fast temperature shifts. Both crack glass.
