Start with the law in your state
Cannabis is illegal under federal law. The FDA lists it as a Schedule I controlled substance. State programs do not change federal rules. They remove state penalties for licensed activity only. Before you open a cart, confirm three facts: your state's legal status, the minimum age, and the possession limit.
- Adult use: 21 and older in states with legal retail sales.
- Medical: 18 and older in many states with a valid patient card.
- Purchase limits differ by state. Washington allows 1 oz of flower, 7 g of concentrate, and 16 oz of solid edibles per transaction. California allows 28.5 g of flower.
Buy only from licensed retailers
Every legal state publishes a license list. Search the retailer name in the state database. Match the license number on the site to the record. A licensed shop posts its license number, a street address, and a phone number. If a site hides all three, close the tab.
order marijuana online delivery
Delivery follows the same rule. Only a licensed retailer or a licensed delivery service may bring cannabis to your door. Ask for the license number before you order, and check it against the state list.

Read the lab test
State-licensed cannabis is tested for pesticides, heavy metals, mold, yeast, and residual solvents. The result is a certificate of analysis (COA). Ask for the COA for your batch. The document should show the batch number, the test date, the lab name, and the lab license number. Compare the THC and CBD percentages on the label to the COA. If they do not match, do not buy.

CDC investigators linked a 2019 lung injury outbreak to vitamin E acetate in unregulated vape cartridges. Regulated cartridges carry test results. Unregulated cartridges often do not.
Know what you are buying
- Flower: sold by weight in grams or ounces. Check the harvest date.
- Concentrate: sold in grams. Common forms are wax, shatter, rosin, and live resin.
- Vape cartridge: check oil volume, hardware type, and the solvent test.
- Edible: check milligrams of THC per piece and per package. 10 mg is a common single dose.
Payment and pickup
Federal banking rules keep most card networks out of cannabis. Most licensed shops take cash or debit. Some take cashless ATM payments. Bring a government ID. Online orders require ID at pickup or delivery. Expect state and local taxes on top of the menu price.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Sites that ship across state lines. Interstate shipping is illegal. A shop that promises it is not licensed.
- "Gifting" schemes. You pay for a sticker or a shirt and get cannabis as a gift. Several states treat this as an illegal sale.
- Social media DMs and chat app menus. No license number, no lab test, no recourse.
- Hemp-derived THC sold nationwide. The 2018 Farm Bill allows hemp with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC by dry weight. Some states have banned these products. Check your state list.
- Prices far below the local market. That points to untested product.
Quick checklist
- Confirm state law, age limit, and possession limit.
- Verify the retailer license in the state database.
- Request a COA for the exact batch.
- Check the label for potency, batch number, and harvest or expiration date.
- Have ID and a payment method the shop accepts.
