Saliva tests usually detect THC for 24 to 48 hours after cannabis use. Occasional users often clear within 12 to 24 hours. Daily or heavy users can stay positive for up to 72 hours, and in rare cases a bit longer. Oral fluid screening looks for parent delta-9 THC, not the THC-COOH metabolite that urine tests target, which is why the saliva window is much shorter than the urine window.

Detection window by use pattern

What oral fluid testing measures

A collection swab sits in the mouth for a few minutes and absorbs fluid from the gum line and cheek. Labs then screen for delta-9 THC and confirm positives with a second method such as gas chromatography or mass spectrometry. The test is looking for recent cannabis exposure, not a stored reserve in the body.

Factors that change the window

Steps to estimate your own detection window

  1. Write down the exact date and time of your last use.
  2. Note the route you used: flower, vape, dab, or edible.
  3. Note how often you used in the two weeks before that.
  4. Apply 24 hours if you are an occasional user and 48 to 72 hours if you use daily.
  5. Test with a home oral fluid kit at the 24-hour mark.
  6. Retest at 48 hours if the first result is positive.

What a saliva result does not tell you

A positive oral fluid result does not measure impairment. It shows THC was present at collection time. Saliva THC levels do not track blood THC levels closely and cannot tell you how high a person is or how safely they can drive. Detection times also vary enough between people that any single number is an estimate, not a guarantee.
