At Home Cannabis Test Kit
Get accurate cannabis potency results with our easy-to-use At Home Cannabis Test Kit.
Home cannabis drug tests are accurate enough to catch most regular users, but they are screening tools rather than proof. A positive result means THC metabolites were detected above the test's cutoff level, and a negative result means nothing was detected above that level at that moment. Either answer can be wrong, so a home result works best as a signal that points toward or away from lab confirmation.
Accuracy in drug testing splits into two parts. Sensitivity is how well a test finds THC when it is present. Specificity is how well it avoids flagging a sample when THC is not present. A strip tuned for high sensitivity can produce more false positives, while a strip tuned to avoid false positives may miss low metabolite levels.
Both error types show up in consumer kits:

Most home cannabis drug tests use a lateral flow immunoassay strip, the same basic chemistry behind workplace urine screening. Antibodies on the strip bind to carboxy-THC (THC-COOH), the main metabolite the body creates after cannabis is processed. Urine is the most common sample type. Saliva kits look for parent THC and work best within a short window after use. Hair tests cover a longer period but are uncommon in consumer kits because they need lab processing.
Cutoff levels decide everything. The federal workplace drug testing program uses 50 ng/mL as the initial urine immunoassay cutoff and 15 ng/mL for confirmation. Many home kits follow the 50 ng/mL line, and some market 20 ng/mL versions for higher sensitivity.
Detection windows vary widely by body fat, metabolism, hydration, dose, and frequency of use. Commonly cited ranges for urine tests:
Saliva kits typically detect THC for hours to about 1 or 2 days. Hair tests can reach back months, but consumer hair kits are uncommon and less standardized.
A valid strip shows a control line. If the control line is missing, the test failed regardless of what the test line shows. On a standard strip, a visible test line means negative even when it is faint. A missing test line with a present control line means positive. Read the result inside the time window printed on the instructions, since lines that appear after 10 to 15 minutes are not valid.
Home strips are initial screens. Lab testing uses gas chromatography mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, which identify specific molecules and quantify them. A laboratory result is the standard for employers, medical review officers, treatment programs, and any situation with legal weight.
