A beginner dab setup needs six things: a dab rig or a portable concentrate vaporizer, a quartz banger or nail, a carb cap, a dab tool, a butane torch (or an electric nail), and isopropyl alcohol with cotton swabs for cleanup. That covers the whole starter kit. Everything else is optional.

The six-piece starter kit
- Rig or vaporizer. A small glass water pipe with a 14mm joint works for home use. A portable concentrate pen or wax vaporizer works if you want something pocket-sized and pre-set.
- Banger or nail. Quartz bangers heat fast, hold flavor, and cost less than titanium or ceramic. Match the banger's joint size and gender to the rig.
- Carb cap. A cap restricts airflow over the hot banger. It lowers pressure so the concentrate vaporizes at a lower temperature instead of burning.
- Dab tool. A stainless or quartz pick moves concentrate from jar to banger. Get one with a flat end and a pointed end.
- Torch. A butane torch with a lock and a wide flame beats a lighter, which leaves soot on the banger. Electric nails replace the torch and hold a steady temperature.
- Cleaning supplies. 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, and a small jar for soaking. Clean glass gives better flavor and longer life.
Optional gear worth adding later
- Infrared thermometer to read banger temperature instead of guessing by cooldown time.
- Silicone mat to protect the table from heat and sticky residue.
- Glass or silicone concentrate container for single grams.
- Terp pearls and a spinner cap, once the basic routine feels routine.
Rig versus portable vaporizer
A rig with a quartz banger gives the most control and the best flavor, but it needs a torch, a surface that can take heat, and about two minutes of setup. A portable concentrate vaporizer trades some flavor for convenience: load the chamber, press a button, inhale. Buyers who plan to dab indoors at a desk usually prefer the rig. Buyers who dab on the go usually prefer the vaporizer. Neither is a wrong choice for a first purchase.

How to take a first dab
- Set the rig on a stable, heat-safe surface.
- Fill the water chamber to the marked line.
- Load a piece of concentrate about the size of a grain of rice onto the dab tool.
- Heat the banger with the torch for 15 to 30 seconds, moving the flame around the walls.
- Let the banger cool for 30 to 45 seconds before you apply anything.
- Touch the dab to the banger floor and inhale slow and steady.
- Set the carb cap on the banger right after the concentrate melts and keep inhaling.
- Exhale fully, then wait 10 to 15 minutes before you judge the dose.
- Swab the warm banger with a dry cotton swab, then with isopropyl alcohol.
Dose and safety notes
- Start with a rice-grain dab. Concentrates run far stronger than flower, so a small piece is a full dose for a new user.
- Do not chase a bigger dab because the first one felt mild. Peak effects arrive over several minutes.
- Dab with someone else present the first few times.
- Buy concentrate from licensed shops with batch testing. Unregulated THC vape products have been tied to severe lung injury.
- Store concentrate in a cool, dark place and keep the torch away from curtains, pets, and anything flammable.
- Skip dabbing on a day you have to drive or operate equipment.
