Top pick: The Emerald Cup
The Emerald Cup is a competition and public event in Sonoma County, California. It started in 2003. Growers enter flower, hash, rosin, edibles, and topicals. Judges score entries on aroma, flavor, effect, and lab results. Winners are named in December. The 2021 and 2022 editions ran at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. The show draws hundreds of exhibitors and a public audience.

Tickets sell in tiers. Judge kits cost more than general admission and sell out first. Prices change by year. Check the current listing before you buy. On-site consumption depends on the permit for that year.

Other options
- High Times Cannabis Cup. Running since 1988, with US editions in California, Michigan, Nevada, Illinois, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arizona. Some editions sell judge kits with samples. Buyers score the entries and submit results. Rules for sampling differ by state.
- MJBizCon. Las Vegas Convention Center, December. Business-to-business. No public consumption. Sessions cover cultivation, retail, testing, and federal policy. Organizers report more than 25,000 attendees. This is a supply chain event, not a tasting.
- Hall of Flowers. Trade show in Santa Rosa and Palm Springs. Buyers and brand reps. Public access is limited. Useful for seeing new releases before they reach shelves.
- Spannabis. Barcelona, Spain, in March. One of the largest European expos. Barcelona cannabis clubs run as private associations. The fair itself is a public trade expo.
- Lift & Co. Expo. Toronto, Canada. Industry conference and trade show. Canadian federal rules restrict sampling and consumption at public events, so this stays a business event.
How to compare them
- Access. Public ticket, trade badge, or judge kit. A judge kit gives the closest thing to a tasting flight.
- Categories. Flower, hash, rosin, vape, edibles. Hash and rosin categories matter most to connoisseurs. Ask if entries ship with full lab panels for potency and pesticides.
- Consumption. On-site use is allowed in some states and venues, not others. Confirm before you book travel.
- Timing. Most run between October and December, after harvest.
Legal notes
Cannabis remains illegal under US federal law. Each event runs under state and local permits. Do not carry product across state lines. Do not fly with it. Canada and Spain set their own rules. Ask the organizer what is permitted on site.
